FAQ

The Norwegian Maritime Directorate has set the regulations for how many people can be on board one RIB at a time. That number is a maximum of 12 people plus boat driver and guide.

RIB Lofoten has three modern and safe RIBs for seafaring. We can also provide many more RIBs if needed for larger groups. Contact us by email if you have a large group: [email protected].

We focus on safety and before all trips our experienced skippers go through our safety routines for your and ours safety.
Our ships are built and maintained to strict standards set by Det Norske Veritas.
Our skippers are certified with all relevant maritime safety courses.
Our vessels are equipped with electronic GPS navigation systems, radio equipment, flares, and a variety of relevant equipment to maximize your personal safety.
On board the boat you have a separate seat with full back support.
Das Unternehmen hat ein eigenes HSE/IK-System vorbereitet.

Our passengers are given floatation warm suits that are waterproof and windproof. These are approved suits that keep the heat well, even on winter days in sub-zero temperatures. We also hand out protection glasses and thick warm gloves that anyone who wants can borrow.

All our passengers are insured.

We require you to meet us 15 minutes before departure.. This is to allow enough time to change all to correct size suits and to provide a mandatory safety briefing to all fellow passengers. You are welcome to come earlier.

All passengers are responsible for the loss/damage of cameras, mobile phones, glasses and other valuables.

Pregnant women or people with back problems, neck problems or other physical limitations must always inform the boat operator about this before departure. The boat operator has the right to reject people with these health problems or they must sit in a place designated by the boat operator.

The boat operator has the right to reject intoxicated persons who are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. RIB trips must be safe for you and your fellow passengers.

RIB Lofoten

You will find us in the center of Svolvær (Torget, Svolvær) right next to the Hurtigruten pier and the Lofoten Culture House.

We have our own floating pier where the boats are normally located. Hurtigruten adds a little further out on the quay.

Bring your camera! Big or small, bring them all. Being on the same level as the whales and often getting the feeling that you come close to these amazing animals gives you the perfect opportunity for taking photos. Being so close to the surface gives you the possibility to get photos not only of the whales and the sea, but also with mountains and sky in the background. Just remember to cover your camera while driving to avoid any splashes. The same goes for photographing the birds. Most people are not professional photographers, and very few have previously seen whales before. We therefor say; remember to enjoy the moment without looking through the camera lens all of the time. As, unless you have a very good lens, you will experience the moment very differently from behind a camera than through your own eyes.

Seasickness is usually not a big problem on our boats. That is however not to say you will never get seasick. This depends on the conditions on sea, meaning what kind of waves we have. It also depends on your state of the day. Do not avoid eating before going to sea thinking that will prevent you from throwing up. If you go out on an empty stomach you may acquire the exact opposite effect of what you initially wanted to achieve. An empty stomach can increase your chance of feeling sick rather than avoiding you from feeling nauseous. Our advice is to eat normal and to avoid any stress. Remember that while driving it is very rare to feel sick. It is when laying still that we can get troubles with our balance system. But try not to let this affect your experience before going out as in most cases you are not going to feel a thing. Should the feeling anyway occur try to find a point of focus (other than your stomach) and do not close your eyes as that can affect your balance system even more. We do not hand out travel sickness pills, but you can require such at the pharmacies if you wish to use them.

We provide our guests with warm flotation suits, gloves and goggles. What to wear under the suits depends on the weather on the day. Outdoor clothing might for instance be recommended as a supplement during winter while on one of those perfect days during summer you might not need more than a t-shirt. Remember that what was considered reasonable on land may no longer feel the same after 1 hour at sea.

We do not offer any sea rafting. However, this is not the same as saying you will never get wet on the boat. From time to time the conditions on sea will provide some splash of sea. Rubber boots are usually not needed, as they also can get quite cold, but hiking shoes are usually perfect any time of the year. Sneakers can be sufficient on warmer days but avoid ankle socks. It is usually a question of keeping your feet warm, rather than avoiding getting wet.

The minimum age for joining our trips is 4 years old. It is important to remember that for the younger children time may not be of essence but at the same time they have no real concept of time. All though it may be difficult to prepare the children it is at least important for the parents to keep that in mind.
It does not matter the size of your dog; it is not possible to bring them with you on the boat. Most people leave them in the car for the time we are out at sea. We may sometimes also have the opportunity to keep your dog outside on the front porch.

Whale trip last around 2 hours, you should arrive at our reception 20 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

Backpacks are not usually a necessity unless you have camera bags. Remember that the trips are not particularly long, and we have the experience that those who chose to bring their bags never really need them on sea. If you have valuables, it is better to lock it in your car or leave it at the reception for us to look after it than to bring it with you on the boat. There are also big pockets on the suits where you can keep your phone and some snacks. Just remember to empty your pockets when you are back from sea.

You can pay all kinds of debit and/or credit cards before we depart to the sea. Cash is also possible (NOK, USD and EUR).
